A Seine river cruise at night, for the lights of Paris
A Seine river cruise at night trades detail for drama: floodlit facades, glowing bridges and the Eiffel Tower sparkling on the hour. Here is how to plan the hour after dark.

Why go out on the river after dark
Paris looks like a different city from the water at night. The bridges, many of them richly carved, become arcs of light; the Louvre and the Musée d'Orsay glow along the banks; Notre-Dame stands lit above the quays of the Île de la Cité. A Seine river cruise at night strips away the traffic and the crowds you notice in daylight and leaves the architecture and the reflections.
There is also the tower. After dusk the Eiffel Tower sparkles for 5 minutes at the start of each hour, and seeing that from the river, with the reflection breaking on the water, is the moment many visitors remember most.1 The busiest night boats leave from the foot of the tower itself, so the start or the end of your hour often frames it.
An evening Seine river cruise also fits around the rest of your day. You can see a museum, have dinner ashore and still be on the water after dark, then walk home along the river. The question is less whether to go at night than which boat and which hour, and that is what the rest of this page is about.

The boats that sail at night
The most reviewed evening choice is a 1-hour cruise with music from 2 Port de Suffren, on 100% electric boats, past Les Invalides, the Musée d'Orsay, the Île de la Cité, Notre-Dame, the Hôtel de Ville, the Louvre, the Place de la Concorde and the Grand Palais. There is no guide on board: an app gives an audio guide in 10 languages, and a drink can be added and collected at the bar. It starts from $29 with 25,150 reviews.
For names to go with the views, the illuminations cruise from Port de la Bourdonnais, pontoon 3, has audio commentary in 14 languages for its 1-hour loop and names the Eiffel Tower among its sights, from $21. The Paris tourist office describes this fleet's commentary as broadcast together with music on the theme of Paris.2
From the center rather than the tower, an evening cruise from the Pont Neuf boards at the Square du Vert-Galant and includes one drink, with Champagne, organic wine, beer or a soft drink to choose from, plus a 10-minute photo stop at the Eiffel Tower, from $44. Its host speaks English and French.

A night cruise without dinner
An evening on the water does not have to mean a long dinner. The evening sightseeing boats are short and simple: about an hour, a seat inside or on deck, and the lights outside. The music cruise sells a drink as an option collected at the bar, with no table service, so it never turns into a meal.
A night cruise without dinner is also far cheaper. The illuminations hour starts from $21 and the music cruise from $29, against $75 for the shortest dinner cruise and $133 for the 2.5-hour dinner with live music. If you want the meal anyway, our page on the Paris dinner cruise compares those boats.
Between the two sits the private boat. It serves no dinner, but original French Champagne is included, and you share the 1.5 hours with nobody but your own party, priced per boat, from $457 for the standard boat of up to 4, with larger boats for 8. For a proposal, a birthday or a small group of friends, it is the night cruise that feels most like an occasion.

When it gets dark, and when the last boats leave
Darkness comes at very different hours through the year. At mid-month Paris has about 15.7 hours without sun in December but only 7.9 hours in June, so a winter night cruise can start straight after an early dinner while a June one only turns dark late in the evening.3 Check the sunset time for your date and add about an hour for full darkness.
Then check the timetable, because the last boats leave earlier than you might think. The illuminations cruise runs every 30 minutes from 10 am to 10 pm between April and September, and every hour from 10:30 am to 9 pm between October and March. The Bateaux Mouches sightseeing ticket lists departures until 9:30 pm. In June, that leaves a narrow window between true darkness and the last boat.
That is why winter and the shoulder seasons are the easiest time for a night cruise. From October to March the city is dark by the time the boats are still running every hour, and the sparkle shows on several departures in a row.1 In summer, aim for the last or second-to-last boat and accept that the sky may still hold some blue.
The landmarks after dark
Some sights are better at night than by day. The Conciergerie's towers and the long Louvre facade are dramatic under floodlights, and the Pont Neuf, the oldest bridge in Paris despite its name, shows off its arches and the carved masks on its cornices, 384 of them according to the city.45 The Pont Alexandre III's lamps and gilded statues make it the most theatrical bridge of all.6
The Statue of Liberty replica at the downstream tip of the Île aux Cygnes, by the Pont de Grenelle, appears on the route of one dinner cruise and on the private cruise, which starts opposite it. The Pont de Bir-Hakeim, at the island's other end, carries the elevated metro on its upper level, and trains crossing it at night add moving light to the scene.7
At the Pont de l'Alma, look for the Zouave statue on the pier, the soldier whose figure still shows how high the floods rise.8 In normal times the river's gauge in Paris reads only 1 to 2 metres; in the flood of 1910 the water reached the Zouave's shoulders.910
Tips for a better night cruise
On any night cruise in Paris, sit outside if you can, at least for part of the hour. Glass roofs reflect the cabin lights and spoil both the view and the photos. On a cold evening, take a warm layer and step out for the bridges and the sparkle, then retreat inside. Average night lows sit around 3 to 4 °C in winter, from 3.2 °C in January to 3.8 °C in December.3
For photos, use your phone's night mode, brace it on the rail and shoot as a bridge approaches rather than under it. Video works better than stills at the moment of the sparkle. If you want to know the stories behind what you see, download the operator's app before you board on a boat without a live guide.
Finally, plan the way home. Night boats bring you back to their pier, often at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, late in the evening. A walk along the river is part of the pleasure, but know where your metro station or taxi rank is before you set off, and if rain is forecast, remember these tickets can be cancelled free until 24 hours ahead.
